Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Gelco Chimney Cap Installation: The Atlanta Owner’s Guide
We stock and install Gelco chimney caps and Gelco-compatible replacement parts throughout the Atlanta metro, with most cap installations running $240 – $460 installed depending on flue size, roof access, and whether you’re replacing a standard single-flue cap or a multi-flue custom unit. If your cap is rusted through, missing from a storm, or letting rain straight down the flue, we can usually get it swapped the same week we inspect it. The way most Atlanta homeowners find out their Gelco cap failed is simple: water stains on the ceiling near the fireplace, a damp smokey smell in the living room after a heavy rain, or they spot rust streaks on the chimney crown from the ground. Sometimes a squirrel makes it obvious.
Which Gelco Models This Applies To
Gelco makes a few distinct cap lines, and the compatibility question is the first thing we sort out on a call or site visit. The standard Gelco single-flue cap fits most 8″ x 8″, 8″ x 13″, and 13″ x 13″ clay tile flues, but the mounting style varies: some models use pressure screws that tighten against the inside of the flue tile, others use a slip-in base, and the multi-flue versions use legs bolted to the crown. If you have the original box or the stamped aluminum hood is still legible, that helps. If not, we take flue tile measurements and match the cap from there. One Atlanta-specific gotcha: many older homes in Grant Park, Kirkwood, and Decatur still have unlined or clay-tile-only flues with odd tile dimensions, and a stock cap from a big-box store often won’t seat correctly on those. We carry Gelco’s standard and adjustable models on the truck, plus aftermarket equivalents from Copperfield where they make more sense for the flue size and the look of the home. We’re an independent service provider, not affiliated with Gelco, so our recommendation is based on what fits your chimney and what holds up to Georgia weather, not on moving one brand.

Signs Your Gelco Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
- Water in the firebox after rain. This usually means the cap’s hood is rusted through, a seam has split, or the cap has shifted off the flue. In Atlanta, where summer thunderstorms roll through fast and dump an inch of rain in an hour, a small opening turns into a soaked flue quickly.
- Rust streaks down the chimney crown or brick face. Galvanized caps eventually sacrifice their coating and begin rusting. The rust runs down the crown and stains the masonry, which tells you the cap itself is nearing the end and should be swapped before it holes through.
- Debris or nesting material on the smoke shelf or damper. A cap with a damaged or missing screen invites birds, squirrels, and summer wasp nests. We’ve pulled twigs and dried leaves out of Atlanta flues in neighborhoods from Virginia-Highland to Sandy Springs where the cap looked fine from the ground but had a torn mesh panel.
- Draft problems that got worse, not better. A failing cap can partially block the flue or disrupt the updraft. If fires are harder to start or smoke is backing into the room in a way it never used to, the cap might be part of the story.
- The cap is just gone. High winds from spring and fall storm fronts in Atlanta do snatch caps off chimneys, especially older pressure-screw models that were never re-tightened after the original install. If you see the cap in the yard or your neighbor’s yard, call before the next rain.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For most Atlanta single-family homes, a Gelco chimney cap installation runs $240 – $460 installed. The spread comes down to three things: flue configuration (single flue costs less than a multi-flue crown-mounted cap), roof pitch and access (two-story steep roofs in neighborhoods like Morningside or Brookhaven take more time and safety setup than a low-slope ranch in East Point), and the cap model itself. A standard replacement Gelco single-flue cap with spark screen is toward the lower end. A larger multi-flue cap, a custom crown-mount job, or an aftermarket Copperfield equivalent with a lifetime warranty lands higher.
Here’s the breakdown we give on every quote:
- Cap and screen: $90 – $220 depending on size and series
- Labor and roof access: $120 – $210 depending on roof pitch, height, and safety setup
- Crown prep and sealing: $30 – $60 when minor crown patching or re-sealing around the cap base is needed
Every installation includes a written price before any work begins, photos of the existing cap and the finished install, and the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the cap loosens, leaks, or fails because we installed it wrong, we come back and fix it at no charge, in writing. That’s a standing guarantee, not a promotional one.
DIY or Call Us?
If you want to check a cap yourself from the ground, go ahead: look for visible rust, a shifted lid, or missing mesh. But actually replacing a chimney cap means working on a roof, usually near the peak, often with a flue that’s hot from recent use and a clay tile that cracks if you over-torque a pressure screw. Cory Mitchell has pulled plenty of caps in Atlanta and seen the aftermath of well-intentioned DIY jobs where a homeowner cracked the flue tile or left the cap loose enough for wind to rattle it and chip the crown. If you’re comfortable on the roof with proper safety gear and you know your flue dimensions, a stock single-flue cap is a reasonable Saturday job. If you’re on a steep roof, a two-story chase, or a custom multi-flue crown, that’s where the risk outweighs the savings. We’d rather show you a photo of the problem than talk around it, so if you’re unsure, call us and we’ll inspect it properly. Call (762) 320-6525 and we’ll get you on the schedule.
FAQs
A Gelco cap in the Atlanta climate typically lasts 10 – 15 years depending on sun exposure, tree cover, and how close you are to the coast or to major roads where airborne salt and sulfur accelerate rust. Homes with full southern exposure and no shade will go through a galvanized cap faster than shaded properties in neighborhoods like Peachtree Hills or Brookwood Hills, and stainless versions outlast galvanized by several years in the same conditions. Call (762) 320-6525 and we’ll tell you if your cap is worth resealing or ready to replace.
Yes, if the damage is limited to a rusted screen or a bent hood on an otherwise sound frame, a repair is usually possible and costs less than a full replacement. If the base is cracked, the seams are split, or the cap is rusted through, patching doesn’t buy you much time and replacement is the honest answer. We’ll tell you which one you’re looking at and show you the photos to prove it.
Most single-flue Gelco cap replacements take 30 to 60 minutes onsite once we’re set up, which includes removing the old cap, checking the flue tile for damage, and installing and sealing the new one. Multi-flue crown mounts can run two hours or more depending on crown condition and cap size. We quote the time upfront along with the price, so you’ll know what the day looks like before we arrive.
We keep the common Gelco single-flue sizes on the truck along with Copperfield equivalents, plus adjustable bases for odd tile dimensions. If you need a specific multi-flue size or a stainless upgrade, we can usually source it within a few days and install it as soon as it arrives. We’ll confirm availability when you call and we’ll never sell you a special order without an install date attached.
