Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Famco Crown Repair: The Atlanta Owner’s Guide
We install and complete crown repair on Famco chimney caps and chase covers throughout Atlanta, with most jobs running between $340 and $790 depending on the damage and access. We stock common Famco replacement components on the truck, so a single visit often covers the diagnosis, the part, and the repair. Most Atlanta homeowners discover the crown problem the same way: they notice rust streaks running down the chase, hear a loose metal rattle in the wind, or see daylight through a screw hole that used to hold the cap in place.
Famco crowns sit directly above the flue assembly and take the worst of Atlanta’s weather: hard spring thunderstorms, July heat that bakes the aluminum, and winter freeze-thaw cycling that works screws loose. Once the crown’s seal fails, water gets inside the chase and the chimney system starts deteriorating. We’d rather catch the crown problem early, because the crown itself is a $200 to $400 repair, while a rotted chase or water-damaged liner is a much longer conversation.
Which Famco Models This Applies To
Famco makes several crown and cap configurations, and the repair path changes depending on which one you have. Most Atlanta homes fall into one of three buckets: single-flue Famco caps with integrated crowns, multi-flue chase covers with built-in crown assemblies, and older Famco copper or galvanized crowns from the 1990s and 2000s. The identifying information is stamped or riveted inside the crown skirt, usually a model number like SC, MC, or CC followed by a size code. If the stamp is gone, we measure the flue outside diameter and crown footprint on-site.
One compatibility gotcha with Famco is the crown skirt depth. Some Atlanta builders used shallow wood-framed chases, and Famco’s standard skirt depth won’t seat properly on those. We’ve seen the same Famco crown part fail on a 2004 Grant Park bungalow and seat perfectly on a 2015 Cumming build, purely because the chase dimensions differed. The other decision is OEM versus aftermarket. Famco’s OEM crowns hold up well for the price, but for Atlanta’s humidity and rainfall, we often recommend the same Famco crown with a heat-cured sealant upgrade rather than a cheaper aftermarket casting that’s thinner gauge. Hadley Chimney Atlanta is an independent service provider, not affiliated with Famco, so we’re free to tell you honestly when the aftermarket path is fine and when it isn’t.

Signs Your Famco Crown Repair Is Failing
- Rust streaks down the chase exterior. The crown’s steel or aluminum skin is corroding, and water is running down the sides of the chase. In Atlanta’s humid spring and summer, this shows up quickly once the paint or factory coating fails.
- A rattling or humming sound on windy days. The crown’s mounting screws have worked loose, usually after several freeze-thaw winter cycles, and the metal is vibrating against the chase frame.
- Water staining on the ceiling near the chimney chase. Water is getting past the crown, pooling inside the chase, and finding its way into the drywall. By the time you see this, the crown has been compromised for a while.
- Debris or animal sign inside the fireplace. A failed crown leaves gaps at the corners or around the flue collar, and Atlanta’s squirrels and birds take advantage. Nests, twigs, or droppings in the firebox point to that gap.
- Visible screw holes with daylight showing through. Over the years, the crown’s screws back out, and what started as a minor leak turns into a direct water path into the chase.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Atlanta, a full Famco crown replacement with new mounting hardware and waterproof sealant typically runs $340 to $790 installed. That includes removing the old crown, cleaning the chase lip, installing the new Famco or compatible crown, sealing all seams, and securing it with corrosion-resistant fasteners. If the flue collar or spark arrestor mesh is also failing, add $90 to $180. If the chase itself has rot from long-term water intrusion, the repair grows to include carpentry or chase cover replacement, and we’ll walk you through that with photos before any additional work is approved.
Every crown repair carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: a written guarantee on the repair, and a free second visit if the repair fails within the year. The price is written before we start, includes the part, and you’ll get before-and-after photos so you can see exactly what we saw and what we fixed.
DIY or Call Us?
What you can safely do is inspect from the ground: look for rust streaks, check for visible screw holes, and listen for loose metal on windy days. If you have a safe way to view the crown from an upper window or with binoculars, take a close look at the seams and corners. What we’d caution against is getting on the roof yourself to tighten screws or reseal a crown. A wet Atlanta roof, a pitched chase top, and an aluminum crown that’s already loose make for a bad combination. We’ve also seen owners use the wrong sealant, like a standard silicone, which fails within months under Atlanta’s UV and heat.
If you’re seeing any of the failure signs above, call us at (762) 320-6525. Cory Mitchell will get someone out to assess it, show you photos of what’s actually going on, and give you a straight answer on whether it needs repair now or can wait.
FAQs
A properly installed Famco crown in the Atlanta area typically lasts 12 to 18 years, though Georgia’s intense sun, heavy spring rain, and winter freeze-thaw cycles can shorten that for crowns with inferior sealant or loose installation. If your crown is over 15 years old and showing rust, replacement is usually the smarter money.
Yes, if the damage is limited to loose fasteners, minor pitting, or small seam gaps, we can repair the crown with proper heat-cured sealant and new hardware. If the metal itself is rusted through or the crown is warped, replacement is the only path that will hold. Call (762) 320-6525 and we’ll tell you which one you’re looking at before any work begins.
Most Famco crown replacements in Atlanta take 60 to 90 minutes on-site, assuming the chase is accessible and the old crown comes off without trouble. If there’s secondary damage inside the chase, we’ll document it with photos and give you a written price for the additional work before we proceed.
We stock common Famco single and multi-flue crown sizes alongside parts from DuraFlex, HeatShield, and Gelco, so most Atlanta crown repairs are completed in one visit. If your model requires a special-order crown, we’ll order it and schedule the install once it lands, usually within a few days.
