Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
DuraFlex Chimney Cap Installation: The Atlanta Owner’s Guide
We install and replace DuraFlex-compatible chimney caps throughout Atlanta, and in most cases you’re looking at $285 – $460 installed, depending on the cap size and how the existing crown has held up. We keep common DuraFlex cap sizes on the truck, so a swap is usually one visit. Most owners discover the cap has failed when water starts streaking down the fireplace wall after a heavy rain, or when they spot rust flakes on the roof near the flue.
The cap on a DuraFlex system isn’t decorative. It’s the first line of defense against Atlanta’s two biggest chimney killers: our summer downpours and the freeze-thaw cycles that hit the flue tile every January. Once the cap’s mesh or the sheet metal collar rots through, water gets between the liner and the old flue walls, and that’s when a $300 cap replacement turns into a $2,000 liner job. Catching it early matters, and it’s the kind of thing we’d rather show you a photo of than talk around.
Which DuraFlex Models This Applies To
DuraFlex chimney caps are engineered to mate with DuraFlex flexible liner systems, but the fit isn’t universal. The two measurements that actually matter are the liner’s inside diameter (usually 5.5″, 6″, or 7″ for most residential wood-burning setups in Atlanta) and the outside diameter of the flue tile the liner passes through. DuraFlex caps typically clamp onto the liner’s top plate or fasten to the crown with a built-in storm collar. If you have a DuraFlex Pro or DuraFlex Aero system, the cap mounting works the same way, but the stainless steel grade differs based on whether you’re burning wood or gas.
Here’s the gotcha we see regularly: homeowners buy a “universal” DuraFlex cap online, and it won’t seat because their flue tile is oval, their liner was trimmed too short, or the cap was sized for a rigid liner, not the flexible profile. DuraFlex part numbers on the box or cap body (stamped on the collar) tell you the spec, but if the stamp has corroded away, we match it by measuring on-site before any parts get ordered. As an independent chimney service, Hadley Chimney Atlanta isn’t affiliated with DuraFlex, but we’ve installed enough of their liners and caps to know what actually fits. For most Atlanta homes with a 6″ liner, a stainless cap in the $150 – $220 part range is the right call, and a quality aftermarket equivalent can work fine if it’s the same gauge and mesh spacing.

Signs Your DuraFlex Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
- Water stains on the fireplace wall or damper after rain. The cap’s seams or the storm collar have opened, and water is tracking down the inside of the liner instead of shedding off the outside.
- Rust streaks or flaking metal on the cap itself. Some surface rust is cosmetic, but once the mesh starts breaking apart, embers can escape and rain can pour straight down the flue.
- Birds, squirrels, or a raccoon in the chimney. A torn or missing mesh is an open invitation. We’ve pulled live animals out of chimneys in East Atlanta, and almost every time the cap mesh failed first.
- A damp, smoky smell inside the house after a storm. Water is sitting inside the liner where the cap should have diverted it, and the Firebox (the brick chamber where the fire burns) is now wicking that moisture into the surrounding masonry.
- The cap is loose when you tap it with a broom handle from the roof. If the cap moves, the seal is gone. Atlanta’s thunderstorm winds finish the job quickly.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
A DuraFlex chimney cap replacement in Atlanta typically runs $285 – $460 installed. The range depends on three things: whether the cap is standard stainless or an upgraded model with a larger hood for heavier rain, whether the existing storm collar needs to be cut out and replaced, and whether the crown around the flue has cracked and needs a quick masonry patch before the new cap seats correctly. You’ll get a written price before any work begins, every single time, so the number doesn’t change once someone is on the roof.
What’s included: the cap, any storm collar or mounting hardware, removal and disposal of the old cap, a visual inspection of the exposed liner top, and before-and-after photos in your digital invoice. Every cap install is backed by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the fit or seal fails within a year, we come back and make it right at no charge. That’s a written guarantee, not a verbal one.
DIY or Call Us?
If you’re comfortable on a ladder and just want to ID a part, you can safely take a phone photo of the cap from the roof edge or from a second-story window. That photo alone tells us whether this is a simple swap or whether the liner top has corroded and needs more work. What you shouldn’t do is get on a sloped roof in Atlanta without proper tie-off gear, or start prying a corroded cap off a clay flue tile. Flue tiles crack under lateral pressure, and a cracked tile inside the chimney is invisible from the roof and a serious fire hazard.
The honest answer: if the cap is loose, rusted through, or letting rain inside, call a pro. We’ll match the right part, install it straight, and show you the work in photos before you pay a cent. Estimates are free, and there’s a live person answering at (762) 320-6525 day or night.
FAQs
Figure 8 to 12 years for the stainless versions, though Atlanta’s acid rain and summer storm cycles push cheaper galvanized caps to fail in 4 to 5. If your cap is over 10 years old and the mesh is swelling or shedding, plan on a replacement sooner than later, because the next failure mode is water ingress, not just rust. Call (762) 320-6525 and we’ll assess it honestly.
If only the mesh is torn in one small section, a patch can buy a season, but it’s a bandage, not a fix. The cap is a pressure point for wind and rain, and once the metal fatigues in one spot, the rest follows fast. For anything beyond a small mesh hole, replacement is the cheaper choice over two years. Call (762) 320-6525 for a straight answer on your cap.
The actual remove-and-replace is 45 to 90 minutes once we’re set up, longer if the crown needs a masonry patch or we’re matching an unusual liner size. You’ll have a written price before we start, photos after we finish, and a digital invoice you can pay from your phone. Book by calling (762) 320-6525.
We stock common DuraFlex-compatible stainless caps in 5.5″, 6″, and 7″ sizes, plus storm collars and mounting hardware. For less common configurations, we order from our Atlanta supplier and schedule a return visit, which is usually one to two business days. We also stock caps and parts that work with HeatShield and Gelco systems. Call us at (762) 320-6525 and we’ll tell you if yours is a same-visit job.
If your DuraFlex cap is failing, don’t wait through the next Atlanta gully washer. Call (762) 320-6525 today for a free estimate, a straight answer, and the photos to prove exactly what we found and fixed.
