Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Gelco Crown Repair: The Atlanta Owner’s Guide
Gelco crown repair in Atlanta typically runs $800 – $1,600 installed, depending on the crown’s size and how much of the existing concrete needs to be removed before the new coat goes on. Hadley Chimney Atlanta stocks Gelco-compatible crown materials on our trucks, so most repairs are completed in a single visit. You’ll know the crown failed when you see cracked concrete at the top of the chimney, water stains on the ceiling near the fireplace, or pieces of mortar washing down onto the roof after a hard Atlanta rain.
A crown is the concrete slab that caps the chimney and keeps water from running straight down the flue tiles. Gelco’s crown repair system is designed to bond to the existing concrete and handle Atlanta’s freeze-thaw cycles, which is where a lot of crowns fail first: small cracks open up, water gets in, and the next cold snap pops the surface apart. We’ve pulled more failed crowns from older chimneys in Grant Park and Decatur after January cold snaps than from anywhere else in the metro.
Which Gelco Models This Applies To
Gelco crown repair is not a single model number but a resin-based crown coating system, so compatibility is driven by chimney dimensions and existing crown condition, not a serial number on the chimney itself. Where it matters is the size of the crown overhang and the type of flue tile installed. Gelco’s system works with both square and rectangular flues, and we match the crown form to the flue size before the new coat goes down. Most Atlanta single-flue chimneys take a crown in the 16″ x 16″ to 20″ x 20″ range, but we measure rather than guess.
The OEM versus aftermarket question is simpler for crowns than it is for mechanical parts. Gelco’s system is the standard spec, and we install it as the repair layer on top of the existing crown structure. What varies is the underlying rebuild work: if the crown is too far gone to resurface, we’ll form and pour a full replacement using a modern concrete mix with a bonded waterproof coat. That ends up functionally identical to what Gelco ships as a finished crown pan, just built on site. We also work with materials from DuraFlex and HeatShield for related repair work, but for crown resurfacing or replacement, Gelco is our default.

Signs Your Gelco Crown Repair Is Failing
- Visible cracks or spalling on the crown surface. This is concrete flaking off in chunks. It means water has already found its way in, and the freeze-thaw cycle that follows takes more surface with it every year.
- Water stains on the ceiling around the chimney chase or fireplace. That’s water entering from the crown and running down inside the flue or between the flue and the chase walls, then showing up at the first drywall seam it reaches.
- Damp or musty smell inside the firebox after rain. A crown that’s no longer sealing lets water pool at the bottom of the flue and sit there, which gets you that wet-campfire smell we hear about a lot in Atlanta on muggy summer days.
- Bits of concrete or white mineral streaks on the roof shingles below the chimney. That’s the crown’s surface eroding and washing down. If you see it once, the crown’s already compromised; it just hasn’t told you loudly yet.
- Rust on the damper or metal firebox components. This is a late-stage sign. Water has been getting past the crown long enough to corrode metal work, and the fix usually includes both the crown and drying out or replacing what rusted.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
A Gelco crown resurfacing or full crown replacement in Atlanta typically lands between $800 and $1,600, with most of the range driven by crown size, accessibility from the roof, and whether we’re resurfacing what’s there or tearing out and repouring the whole thing.
| Scope | Typical Atlanta Installed Range |
|---|---|
| Gelco crown resurfacing (crown intact, surface cracking) | $800 – $1,200 |
| Full crown tear-out and repour with waterproof coat | $1,200 – $1,600+ |
Every crown repair includes a written price before any work starts, your before-and-after photos from our tech’s phone before we leave the roof, and our 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If the repair fails inside a year, the second visit is free. No fine print. Cory doesn’t sell a crown job without a photo of the existing damage, because he’d rather show you a photo of the problem than talk around it.
DIY or Call Us?
We’re honest about this one: you can inspect a crown from the ground with binoculars, and you can see whether it’s cracked by looking at the roofline. What we don’t recommend is an owner mixing crown coating and working at chimney height. Atlanta roofs are steep, crowns sit at the highest point on the house, and the same freeze-thaw that cracked the crown has usually made the masonry underneath unstable enough that footing matters. A fall from a chimney crown is a life-changing injury, and that’s not the place to save a few hundred dollars.
If you want to know whether it’s safe to wait, call us at (762) 320-6525 and describe what you’re seeing. We’ll tell you plainly whether the crown can wait a season or needs attention now, and then we’ll send a tech with a tracked arrival window and a written price before anything comes off the truck.
FAQs
A properly installed Gelco crown repair in Atlanta lasts 12 to 15 years on average, sometimes longer if the crown was rebuilt from scratch with a modern mix. The biggest variable is exposure and how well the crown sheds water off its edges, which is why our forms always extend the overhang and drip edge. Call (762) 320-6525 and we’ll assess whether your existing crown can be resurfaced or needs a full repour.
Yes, a cracked crown can usually be resurfaced if the underlying concrete is solid and the cracking hasn’t broken off chunks larger than a silver dollar. The Gelco system is designed for exactly that situation. If we find the fracture runs deep or the concrete’s crumbling, replacement is the better spend because resurfacing would just paper over a structure that’s already gone. We’ll tell you which one you actually need, and show you the photos to back it up.
Most Gelco crown resurfacing jobs take one visit, about two to three hours on site, including setup and cleanup. A full tear-out and repour typically runs half a day. Both include the same written price, live arrival tracking, and before-and-after photos. Call (762) 320-6525 and we’ll give you a same-visit or next-day window based on the current schedule.
Yes, Hadley Chimney Atlanta trucks carry Gelco crown repair materials, along with parts and materials from DuraFlex and HeatShield for related chimney work. We don’t have to order and reschedule after the first assessment. If your crown needs work, the tech can typically handle it that same visit. Call (762) 320-6525 and we’ll confirm what’s on the truck for your chimney’s configuration before we arrive.
If you’re seeing crown damage or just want an honest read on whether it’s a problem yet, call Hadley Chimney Atlanta at (762) 320-6525. We’re an independent chimney service company, not affiliated with Gelco, and we’ll give you a straight assessment with photos and a written price before any work starts.
