Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
HeatShield Chimney Cap Installation: The Atlanta Owner’s Guide
We stock and install HeatShield-compatible chimney caps throughout Atlanta, and a full cap replacement with installation typically runs $425 to $780 depending on your flue size and roof access. Most jobs are booked within 3 to 5 business days, and we carry common HeatShield cap sizes on the truck so the swap usually takes under an hour once we’re on the roof. You’ve likely found this page because water is getting in around the cap, or the cap’s mesh screen has rusted through, or the cap itself has gone missing entirely after a storm. The most common discovery moment in Atlanta is a rainy week followed by water stains on the ceiling near the chimney chase. Or a bird in the firebox, which is never a great way to start the day.
Which HeatShield Models This Applies To
HeatShield cap systems are built around two variables: the flue’s outside diameter and the cap’s mounting style. Most Atlanta homes with HeatShield liners use either a standard slip-in cap that friction-fits over the flue tile or a top-mount cap that bolts to the crown. The size you need is usually stamped on the old cap’s underside flange, but if that’s gone we measure the flue’s outside dimension to the nearest 1/4 inch and match it to HeatShield’s sizing increments. This matters because HeatShield uses slightly different tolerance ranges than generic caps. A big-box cap that’s “close enough” will rattle in wind or sit crooked, and a crooked cap leaks at the base.
On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question: HeatShield caps are built well, but the aftermarket options we stock from Copperfield and Olympia Chimney often use the same gauge stainless and cost 20 to 30 percent less for comparable durability. We’ll tell you the price difference before we order anything. We’re an independent chimney company in Atlanta; we’re not affiliated with HeatShield, which means we match the part to your setup, not to a brand loyalty program. If you’ve got an older HeatShield cap with a round base and internal tension springs, that’s the series that’s been discontinued, and a modern replacement is actually a better fit than buying a used original.

Signs Your HeatShield Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
- Water staining on the ceiling or wall near the chimney. The cap’s job is to keep rain out of the flue. If the cap’s seal has failed at the base, water runs down the outside of the flue tile and into the chase. We see this often in Atlanta’s older bungalows where the crown has also cracked.
- Rust streaks running down the cap or the flue tile. This tells you the cap’s coating has failed and the underlying steel is oxidizing. In Atlanta’s humid summers, that process moves faster than you’d expect, especially on caps older than eight years.
- Birds or squirrels getting into the fireplace or flue. The cap’s mesh screen is the barrier. Once it’s torn or rusted through, Atlanta’s chimney swifts and squirrels treat your flue like a protected nesting site. We’ve pulled enough nests out of fireboxes to know exactly what that sounds like at 6 a.m.
- A cap that’s visibly tilted, loose, or hanging off one side. High wind from summer thunderstorms and the occasional tornado-watch afternoon can break the mounting legs. A tilted cap no longer seals, and every rain event after that is getting into places it shouldn’t.
- You can hear the cap rattling or scraping in the wind. If the tension springs or set screws have loosened, the cap moves against the flue tile with every gust. That scraping is metal on masonry, and it means the cap is essentially unseated. It also means you’re probably losing sleep during any storm that rolls through.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
In Atlanta, a HeatShield or HeatShield-compatible cap replacement runs $425 to $780 fully installed. That covers the cap itself ($180 to $410 depending on size and material gauge), the mounting hardware, removal and disposal of the old cap, the install, and a photo of the finished cap on your flue so you can see exactly what was done without climbing up there yourself. The price moves with flue size: a small 8-inch round flue sits near the bottom, while a large rectangular flue or a custom chase cover pushes toward the top. Roof access is a factor too. Steep pitches on Atlanta’s mid-century split-levels take more setup time than a walkable ranch roof in Decatur.
Every cap install comes with our 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If the cap shifts, leaks, or fails within a year, we come back and make it right at no charge. That’s not a warranty you’ll get from a handyman with a ladder. We also photo-document the whole job before, during, and after, so the invoice you pay online matches the work we actually did on your roof.

AfterDIY or Call Us?
You can safely do the diagnosis from the ground. Look up at the cap with binoculars or your phone camera zoomed in. Check for rust streaks, a tilted cap, missing mesh, or daylight visible where the cap meets the flue tile. If you’re comfortable on a ladder, you can sometimes confirm a loose cap by gently wiggling it from the lower roof edge. But here’s where DIY goes wrong: the actual swap means working at the roofline, often on a pitch, usually with tools in both hands. Chimney cap installs are roof work, and roof work on Atlanta’s older homes means dealing with crumbling mortar crowns and flue tiles that may already be fragile. One wrong step turns a $425 cap replacement into a hospital trip and a damaged crown. If the cap is loose but not failed, you’re not making anything worse by waiting. If the cap is gone or the mesh is gone, call sooner rather than later. We’ll have a real person on the phone at (762) 320-6525 who can look at our schedule and give you a written price before anyone climbs a ladder. No vague windows, no surprise charges.
FAQs
Figure on 8 to 15 years depending on material gauge and how much direct sun your roof gets. Atlanta’s humidity and storm frequency push caps toward the lower end unless they’re higher-gauge stainless. We’ve seen caps fail in 6 years when they were installed on a south-facing roof with no tree cover, especially if the original seal wasn’t done carefully.
Sometimes, when the only issue is a torn screen or a bent mounting leg, a repair makes sense. But most cap failures we see in Atlanta are rust-through or cracked welds, and those mean replacement. We’ll tell you plainly which one you’ve got and show you a photo. Call (762) 320-6525 and we’ll walk you through what you’re looking at.
The actual install takes 30 to 60 minutes on the roof. The full visit, including setup, the old cap removal, flue inspection while we’re up there, and photo documentation, usually runs 90 minutes to two hours. We combine it with a quick visual on your crown and flashing while we’re up there, and we’ll tell you what we see with photos, not just a verbal summary.
We stock the most common HeatShield-compatible sizes on the truck, including round flues from 6 to 12 inches and standard rectangular flue tile caps. If you need a non-standard size or a custom chase cover, we typically have it in hand within 3 to 5 business days. We also stock parts from Copperfield, DuraFlex, and Gelco for other setups, so we’re not starting from zero on unfamiliar hardware.
